Wolters Kluwer/CCH Data Breach
On May 3 2019, Commercial Clearing House (“CCH”), the cloud-based tax division of Wolters Kluwer, was alerted to security issues within their systems. On May 7 Wolters disclosed that they had experienced numerous service disruptions to their platforms and applications due to attackers accessing and installing malware on its servers. That malware caused Wolters to take its tax return filing and cloud-based data storage platforms and applications offline - just eight days before major tax filings were due.
Accountants who used the filing platform couldn’t file returns. Those who used Wolters’ cloud-based storage for their clients’ documents couldn’t even prepare returns.
On May 15, 2019, the IRS approved an unprecedented extension for tax return types 990, 1120, and 1065 filings that were affected due to the “to CCH software outage.”
Tousley Brain Stephens is investigating a possible data breach class action against Wolters Kluwer and CCH for their negligent handling of customer data. TBS will seek to obtain a refund for all accounting firms affected by the breach. It will also seek clarity on whether the attackers gained access to the accounting firm clients’ personal data.
